“Dancheong” is a Korean traditional pattern design that was commonly used in old Korean palaces and temples. The intricate patterns and significant use of vibrant colors are few of the characteristics that make the design look ‘Korean’. However, the roles that each part of the design had started to make me wonder if changing or altering certain parts of the original ‘dancheong’ design would give a different impression to its aesthetic.

“Hybrid Dancheong” is an illustrated textile piece that re-imagines the original ‘dancheong’ pattern with other foreign pattern elements, creating a hybrid of different cultures into a singular design. The textiles can be used as a ‘bojagi’, a traditional Korean textile patchwork/cloth that is used to wrap presents or carry items. However, it can also be used for any type of purpose, which is why each corner is woven with a metallic ring to be hung or used in multiple situations.
